The reception was mixed, leaning slightly toward the negative. Rotten Tomatoes tallied 56% positive reviews as of August 2026, while Metacritic scored it 59 out of 100. Neil Smith of the BBC called it an improvement on the original, praising the focus on Scrat. Caroline Westbrook in Empire found plenty of laughs but criticized the plot as badly put together. Critics largely agreed that the squirrel was the best part. Ebert was less generous, noting the characters were exhausted.
How it did with audiences
It cost $80 million and returned $667 million worldwide, a margin that made the ice look like a very warm place to be. In the United States, it pulled in $195 million, becoming the first film of 2006 to pass the $100 million mark. That opening weekend set a record for March releases, a title it held for a year before 300 took it. It was the top-grossing animated film of 2006 globally, though Cars edged it out in North America. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10.
