What kind of watch this is

Ice Age is an 81-minute animated adventure where a grumpy mammoth, a chatty sloth, and a predator team up to return a human baby. It is a film where the villain is also the sidekick. The humor relies on timing and character rather than plot twists. If you like your prehistoric epics with a sense of urgency and a lot of snark, this is the one.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 76% approval across 164 reviews, a steady score for a film that arrived with high expectations. The site’s average rating is 6.8 out of 10, which suggests most critics liked it enough to not hate it. Metacritic lands on 61 out of 100, a score that generally means favorable, if not thrilling. Roger Ebert gave it 3 stars, noting he came to scoff but stayed to smile. Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times called it a "blandly likeable computer-animation extravaganza." That comparison to 3 Godfathers does a lot of heavy lifting. Audiences, meanwhile, gave it an A. They are a generous jury.

How it did with audiences

Budgeted at $59 million, the film took in $176 million in the United States and $383 million worldwide. That opening weekend of $46.3 million broke the March record and beat Fox’s $30 million projection. It ranked 9th in North America for 2002. Audiences on TMDB rate it 7.4 out of 10. The numbers suggest people liked seeing a mammoth in a dinner jacket.

What came next for the cast

Before Ice Age, Ray Romano was in Everybody Loves Raymond and John Leguizamo was in Die Hard 2. Afterward, Romano found his way to The Big Sick and The Irishman, while Leguizamo joined the John Wick franchise. The credits do not link the voice of a mammoth to these later film roles. They simply list what followed.
