Hancock (2008)

There are heroes. There are superheroes. And then there's Hancock.

Hancock is a down-and-out superhero who's forced to employ a PR expert to help repair his image when the public grows weary of all the damage he's inflicted during his lifesaving heroics. The agent's idea of imprisoning the antihero to make the world miss him proves successful, but will Hancock stick to his new sense of purpose or slip back into old habits?

What kind of watch this is

Peter Berg directs Will Smith as a superhero who is also, apparently, a terrible roommate. The public is tired of the collateral damage, so Ray, played by Jason Bateman, steps in to manage the crisis. It is a 92-minute study in what happens when you put a celebrity on a pedestal and then knock it over. The film asks if a person can change, or if they just change the damage they do. It is loud, a bit messy, and surprisingly honest about the cost of being famous.

What the critics said

Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 42% as of 2024, with an average review score of 5.4/10 from 2021. Metacritic calculated a Metascore of 49 out of 100 in 2025, indicating mixed or average reception. Variety reported the film got "generally poor reviews," while Reuters noted it was "critically mauled" by those who liked the premise but were confounded by the subplot. Todd McCarthy of Variety found the first half "amusing and plausible," but argued the second half missed opportunities. The consensus is that a flimsy narrative and poor execution undermined the start.

How it did with audiences

It cost $150 million and took $624 million worldwide, a financial result that likely kept the studio executives awake with pleasant dreams. On TMDB, users rate it 6.4 out of 10. The math works; the charm is debatable.

What came next for the cast

Will Smith had I Am Legend behind him and Suicide Squad ahead. Charlize Theron came from The Italian Job and headed for Mad Max: Fury Road. Jason Bateman bounced between Juno and Horrible Bosses. Jae Head moved from Friday Night Lights to The Blind Side. The credits list these shifts. They cannot prove Hancock triggered them. The timeline does the work.
