What kind of watch this is
Mike Flanagan’s 2017 horror-thriller runs 104 minutes, a duration that feels deliberately chosen to stretch the pain. The film is a single, unbroken performance by Carla Gugino as Jessie, handcuffed to a bed in a remote lake house after a dark turn in her marriage. It is not a jump scare machine; it is a psychological pressure cooker. The tension comes from the inescapable setting and the weight of the secrets Jessie must dig up to survive. It asks you to sit with discomfort for a long time, which is exactly the point.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 91% as of October 2021, with an average rating of 7.6 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 77 out of 100 as of December 2025, a score that indicates generally favorable reviews. The consensus is that Carla Gugino carries the small-scale suspense with a career-defining performance. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com rated it 3 out of 4 stars, praising Gugino and Greenwood’s performances and Flanagan’s direction. Stephen King, who watched a rough cut, called it "hypnotic, horrifying and terrific". The praise is specific enough to feel earned, which is rarer than it should be.
How it did with audiences
Gerald’s Game skims along without a box office figure to lean on, which leaves the internet to do the heavy lifting. On TMDB, users give it a 6.4 out of 10. That is a solid score. It suggests the audience accepted the premise, even if they did not fully embrace the result.
What came next for the cast
Carla Gugino moved from a museum heist to a haunted mansion. Bruce Greenwood traded interstellar voyages for a hospital corridor. Carel Struycken stepped away from the Addams household to return to the same King universe. The sequence of credits does not prove Gerald’s Game triggered these shifts. It merely marks a point on the timeline.
