What kind of watch this is
Emma Tammi directs this 110-minute horror thriller. Mike takes a night shift at an abandoned pizzeria because he needs money. The animatronics are the real stars here. They move with a slow, deliberate wrongness that makes every creak of the building feel personal. It is less about jump scares and more about the dread of being watched by things that should not be alive. If you can handle a room that feels too quiet, this works.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 33% and Metacritic at 33/100, a numerical coincidence that feels less like unity and more like a shared mistake. The consensus calls the film muddled and unscary, a verdict backed by a 4.7/10 average. Murtada Elfadl of Variety noted the film forgot what makes the original special, wringing unintentional laughter from its bizarre story. Dylan Roth of The New York Observer agreed, finding jumps but no thrills. Critics panned the muddled plot, yet audiences gave it an A- on CinemaScore.
How it did with audiences
A $25 million budget against a $297.2 million worldwide gross is what accountants call a blockbuster and what fans call a Friday night that paid off. It opened to $80 million, the best weekend for a horror film in 2023, and Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit at $161 million.
What came next for the cast
Josh Hutcherson traded Hunger Games tributes for Beekeeper vigilance. Elizabeth Lail stepped away from You’s stalking horror into a new vein of terror. Matthew Lillard, fresh off Scream and Scooby-Doo, kept the slasher circuit warm. The 2023 film sits between those points, not as a cause. Credits list what followed; they do not explain why.
