Critics treated the jump scare with a wink. Rotten Tomatoes landed on 93% positive as of March 2023. Metacritic, more measured, gave it 78 out of 100 in October 2025, a solid "generally favorable" stamp. The consensus called it a "consistently unpredictable thrill ride," which is high praise for a movie that spends its runtime in a basement. Audiences, however, voted it down with a C+ on CinemaScore. They saw a horror film; the critics saw a puzzle.
