Finding Nemo (2003)
There are 3.7 trillion fish in the ocean. They're looking for one.
Nemo, an adventurous young clownfish, is unexpectedly taken from his Great Barrier Reef home to a dentist's office aquarium. It's up to his worrisome father Marlin and a friendly but forgetful fish Dory to bring Nemo home -- meeting vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls, and more along the way.

What kind of watch this is
Andrew Stanton directed this 100-minute adventure, which relies on a simple, terrifying premise: a single clownfish is lost among 3.7 trillion others. The film leans into the scale of the ocean as a genuine threat, not just a backdrop. Marlin’s anxiety is the engine; Dory’s amnesia is the counterweight. It is a story about the distance between fear and love, measured in kilometers of open water. The stakes feel personal because the ocean is indifferent.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 99% positive reviews, a score that makes disagreement feel like a minor error. Metacritic agrees, landing on 90 out of 100, which it files under universal acclaim. Roger Ebert called it "one of those rare movies where I wanted to sit in the front row and let the images wash out to the edges of my field of vision," a phrase that does a lot of heavy lifting for a fish movie. Lisa Schwarzbaum found it "marvelously soulful and innately, fluidly American as jazz," which is either high praise or a warning about the soundtrack. Most critics saw a visual triumph, though Stephen Holden thought it fell slightly short of its predecessors. It’s the rare underwater film that keeps you looking at the background.
How it did with audiences
A $94 million investment returned $969 million worldwide, with $381 million of that landing in the United States. The math checks out, even if the clownfish didn’t need a spreadsheet to prove their worth. On TMDB, users rate it 7.8 out of 10. IMDb, using a weighted average, scores it 8.2 out of 10 as of March 2026.
Awards
Finding Nemo swept 5 awards from 5 nominations. The headline win was the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, presented to Andrew Stanton in 2004. It was the first Pixar film to take that prize, beating out Brother Bear and The Triplets of Belleville. The film also collected the Genesis Award and the Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Movie. Critics in Kansas City, Las Vegas, and Toronto agreed on its merit.
