What kind of watch this is

Andrew Stanton returns to the ocean floor with a sequel that runs 97 minutes. The hook is simple: Dory wants to know where she came from, a question complicated by the fact that she forgets the answer before she finds it. It is an animated adventure built on the premise that memory is a leaky bucket. The film leans into her short-term memory loss not as a punchline, but as the central obstacle. It asks how you search for a past you cannot hold onto. That is a surprisingly heavy theme for a movie about a blue tang.

What the critics said

Critics mostly agreed the film works. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 94% Tomatometer score as of March 2026. Metacritic sits at 77, which it labels generally favorable. The consensus calls it funny and poignant. Mike Ryan of Uproxx said the film made him cry. He was happy it existed. A. O. Scott of The New York Times noted it lacks dazzling originality but has warmth. Not everyone was convinced. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter argued it falls short of its wondrous progenitor. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times suggested the 13-year gap proved the concept didn't need making.

How it did with audiences

$200 million out, $1.0 billion back. That is a tidy sum for a movie about a fish who forgets things. In North America, it pulled in $486 million. The rest of the world added another $542 million. It crossed the $1 billion mark in October 2016. For a sequel that is mostly about getting lost, the numbers found their way home.
