What kind of watch this is

Tim Story directs this 2007 sequel, which runs 92 minutes. It asks the obvious question: what if the villain is a mirror? The Silver Surfer arrives to stop the team, yet the real danger hides in their own history. The film leans on spectacle, trading character depth for pyrotechnics. It is a loud, earnest attempt at superhero mythology that never quite finds its footing. The tagline promises a secret, but the answer is just more comic book logic.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes, as of October 2023, lists a 38% approval rating. Metacritic, in July 2025, scores it 45 out of 100, a range it labels mixed or average. The consensus is not kind. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times described it as an "amalgam of recycled ideas, dead air, dumb quips, casual sexism and pseudoscientific mumbo jumbo." Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal found it "more fun than in the original," a compliment that barely hides the critique.

How it did with audiences

The film cost $120 million and grossed $289 million worldwide. It opened as the highest-grossing movie at the U.S. box office, pulling in $58 million, but that momentum evaporated quickly. By the second weekend, receipts dropped 66%. Audiences voted with their feet, and their wallets followed. On TMDB, users rate it 5.6 out of 10. The math is simple: a hit that nobody wanted to see again.

What came next for the cast

Chris Evans starred in Not Another Teen Movie before this, then The Avengers and subsequent Marvel entries followed. Jessica Alba had Sin City, with Machete and other action roles arriving later. Ioan Gruffudd moved from Titanic to San Andreas and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Michael Chiklis shifted from Soldier to Gotham and Don't Look Up. The credits list what came next, not why.
