What kind of watch this is

Fede Álvarez’s 2013 horror film runs 91 minutes, a tight span for a group of friends whose retreat into the woods goes wrong in a hurry. The hook is simple: a drug addict seeks help from her brother and his friends, but a book read aloud by one of them summons a demon that possesses her. Jane Levy anchors the chaos as Mia, while Shiloh Fernandez and Lou Taylor Pucci round out the doomed party. The cabin stops being a shelter and becomes a trap. It is the kind of movie that asks you to sit very still.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 63% as of February 2025, while Metacritic lands on 57 out of 100 as of February 2024. That places the film in the "mixed or average" territory, a safe harbor for a slasher that leans hard on its gore. Critics liked what it did, even if they debated how it did it. Chris Tilly of IGN called it a "terrifying, exhilarating and relentlessly entertaining new chapter." Not everyone bought the pitch. Richard Roeper gave it one star, tired of movies that seem to have one goal: gross out the audience.

How it did with audiences

Against a $17 million budget, the film took in $98 million worldwide. That’s a solid return, the kind that keeps studio accountants smiling while ignoring the rest of the ledger. It opened to $25.8 million, finishing first at the box office. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Jane Levy traded Shameless for Don't Breathe and Monster Trucks. Jessica Lucas left Cloverfield behind to join Gotham and Pompeii. Shiloh Fernandez stepped from Red Riding Hood into We Are Your Friends and Return to Sender. Lou Taylor Pucci went from American Horror Story to Spring. The credits list what happened next, not why. Correlation is a strange ghost.
