What kind of watch this is

Mimi Leder directs a 122-minute disaster film where the apocalypse is treated as a scheduling conflict. The hook is not the space rock, but the bureaucracy surrounding it. Robert Duvall plays a gruff astronaut sent to destroy it, while Téa Leoni plays a reporter chasing the story. Elijah Wood is there too, presumably to look young in a crisis. The tagline promises that hope survives, which is doing a lot of heavy lifting for the third act. It is a movie about the machinery of panic.

What the critics said

Critics were divided, leaning toward disappointment. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 45% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, based on 98 reviews. The average rating is 5.8 out of 10. Metacritic gives it a 40 out of 100, which it labels "mixed or average."

The consensus is blunt: "A tidal wave of melodrama sinks Deep Impact's chance at being the memorable disaster flick it aspires to be." Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times noted the film "has a more brooding, thoughtful tone than this genre usually calls for." Others were less forgiving. Rita Kempley and Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post criticized unemotional performances and a lack of tension.

How it did with audiences

Deep Impact cost $75 million and pulled in $349 million worldwide. That’s a solid return, though the accounting gets complicated when a rival movie makes more overall. It opened to $41.1 million, beating out Twister for the top non-holiday May spot that year. For a decade, it held the record for the biggest opening weekend for a female-directed film. Then Twilight arrived in 2008 and took the title. On TMDB, users rate it 6.3.
