What kind of watch this is

Kimberly Peirce directs this 101-minute drama, leaning into the suffocation of a girl who cannot stop the world from hurting her. Chloë Grace Moretz plays Carrie, squeezed between the schoolyard and the pulpit, while Julianne Moore plays Margaret White. The horror here is not just the blood; it is the silence of the people who watch it happen. It is a slow burn that waits for the prompt, then refuses to let you look away.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes lists a 51% Tomatometer score, a figure that sits comfortably in the middle. The average user rating is 5.5 out of 10. Metacritic assigns a 53 out of 100. The consensus notes the cast is talented, but the result feels unnecessary. Kevin C. Johnson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch found it "as good a Carrie remake as possible." He noted it is not truly scary, which is a fair warning. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle called it "highly satisfying," though he noted the original's weirdness was smoothed down. It is a safe movie. Safety is rarely thrilling.

How it did with audiences

It cost $30 million and took in $85 million worldwide. On TMDB, users rate it 6.1 out of 10. The opening weekend landed at $16.1 million, placing it third behind films in their later runs. It finished as the 85th highest-grossing film of 2013 in the United States. The numbers say it worked; the rating says it barely did.

What came next for the cast

Chloë Grace Moretz moved from Kick-Ass to The Equalizer and Neighbors 2. Julianne Moore went from Crazy, Stupid, Love. to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Gabriella Wilde stepped from The Three Musketeers to Wonder Woman 1984. The credits show a shift in scale, not a cause. Careers are not straight lines. Sometimes they are a long hallway with doors opening in unexpected directions.
