What kind of watch this is
Carnival Row is a 2019 fantasy crime drama where magical immigrants clash with a suspicious police force. Orlando Bloom plays a detective investigating murders targeting the fairy community, only to become the prime suspect himself. The show leans into that tension, treating the city’s uneasy peace as a powder keg. You get 18 episodes across 2 seasons, totaling 17 hours of viewing.
What the critics said
Critics found the look impressive but the structure messy. Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season a 57% approval rating, while the second sits at 44%. Metacritic lands on 58, which it files under mixed or average. The consensus calls the world building luscious but the story bloated. Sam Brooks of The Spinoff called the premise a mish-mash of influences. It is a pretty show that forgot to be a coherent one.
How it did with audiences
Carnival Row arrived without a reported budget or a box office figure to lean on. The numbers that stuck are the ones on TMDB, where users rate it 7.7 out of 10. That is a solid score for a fantasy drama that asked its audience to settle into a world of elves, goblins, and bureaucratic tension. It suggests the show found its footing with the people who actually pressed play.
What came next for the cast
Orlando Bloom stepped from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King into Gran Turismo and The Outpost. Cara Delevingne moved from Suicide Squad to Only Murders in the Building. Simon McBurney traded Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation for Nosferatu and The Pale Blue Eye. The credits show a pivot, not a cause. Careers rarely move in straight lines, and this cluster simply followed its own path.
