On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary yellow VW bug.

The film leans into the nostalgia of that specific era, trading the high-stakes global wars of other entries for a simpler, grounded reunion. It is a quieter, more sentimental take on the material. That is not a flaw.
What the critics said
Critics leaned toward approval, even if the numbers suggest mixed feelings. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 91% approval rating as of January 2026, based on 251 reviews. Metacritic lands at 66 out of 100, which it labels generally favorable. It stands as the highest-rated Transformers film on both sites.
Variety’s Peter Debruge called it "basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along." IndieWire’s Liz Shannon Miller noted you can actually see what’s happening in the fights. Not everyone bought in. A.V. Club’s Jesse Hassenger found it disappointing, citing its careless blockbusting.
How it did with audiences
It cost $135 million and took in $468 million worldwide, a margin that keeps the accountants smiling while the fans debate if it saved the franchise. In the United States, it earned $127 million, a solid third-place finish behind Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. For a movie about a robot that learns to drive a Camaro, the numbers suggest it found its groove.
