What kind of watch this is
Ryan Coogler directs this 162-minute action epic. It is not a celebration of what was; it is a reckoning with what remains. The film treats grief as a structural load, bending the plot around the weight of absence rather than justifying it. That is a heavy tonal bet for a superhero sequel, but it lands because the characters are too busy holding the kingdom together to perform their pain. It is a slow burn that trusts its audience to sit in the silence.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports an 84% approval rating. Metacritic gives it a 67, which its algorithm interprets as generally favorable. The critics consensus calls it a poignant tribute that moves the franchise forward. Kambole Campbell from Empire found it imaginative and grounded, though he noted the tilt to CG spectacle was a little jarring. Tom Jorgensen at IGN praised the emotional farewell to T'Challa but warned the plot struggles under the weight of expectation.
How it did with audiences
It cost $250 million and took $859 million worldwide, a spread that makes the accounting look less like a gamble and more like a calculated bet. In the United States, it pulled in $454 million. Audiences on IMDb gave it a 6.6/10 score as of February 2026, while TMDB users rate it 7 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Lupita Nyong'o entered this role after Black Panther and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then moved on to A Quiet Place: Day One and The Odyssey. Danai Gurira had just finished the Avengers pair, followed by The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live and Matchbox the Movie. Tenoch Huerta Mejía came from Spectre and The Forever Purge, with Caught Stealing on the other side. The timeline does not prove the film caused the trajectory. It only marks the point where the paths diverged.
