What kind of watch this is

Don Bluth’s 1997 animated adventure runs 94 minutes and centers on an orphan who travels to Paris with two con men. They plan to pass her off as the lost Grand Duchess Anastasia to claim a reward from the Dowager Empress. It is a fantasy where the biggest lie is the one everyone tells. Meg Ryan, John Cusack, and Kelsey Grammer voice the trio.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes shows an 83% Tomatometer score as of January 2025. The average of rated reviews sits at 7.1 out of 10. Metacritic is less generous, landing on a 61 out of 100 in December 2024. The split is narrow enough that the difference comes down to whether you value charm over rigor. That is a reasonable trade-off.

How it did with audiences

It cost $53 million and made $140 million worldwide. That margin counts as a win in Hollywood, though not a blockbuster. It became Don Bluth’s highest-grossing film, beating An American Tail by about $55 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Meg Ryan moved from romances to more, with You've Got Mail landing the year after. John Cusack shifted from teen icons to weirdos, joining Being John Malkovich in 1999. Kelsey Grammer left sitcoms for action franchises, appearing in X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006. Christopher Lloyd traded time travel for westerns, starring in A Million Ways to Die in the West in 2014. The film did not cause these turns. It just happened to sit in the middle of them.
