What kind of watch this is

Robert Rodriguez directs this 122-minute action sci-fi. The hook is a cyborg waking up with amnesia in a gritty future. She fights like a dancer and looks around with the confusion of someone who has been dead for a century. It is a film that trusts its visuals to do the heavy lifting. The dialogue is often dry, but the action sequences carry the weight. It is less about the plot twists and more about the sheer kinetic joy of watching someone rediscover their own body.

What the critics said

Critics leaned toward mixed. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 61% as of February 2023, with an average score of 6.1/10. Metacritic lands on 53 out of 100 as of July 2025, a number that signals "mixed or average." The consensus notes the story struggles to keep up with the effects. Guy Lodge of Variety called it "muddled," arguing the script short-circuits every time it gets moving. Michael Nordine of IndieWire disagreed, grading it B+ and saying it lives up to its potential while leaving you wanting more. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it an A−.

How it did with audiences

The film cost $170 million and grossed $405 million worldwide. Whether that counts as a win depends on who holds the calculator. Fox insiders claimed it needed $350 million to break even, while outside publications pegged the figure at $400–500 million. Some argued it broke even by the end of its run; others listed losses as high as $53 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. The arithmetic remains deliciously ambiguous.

What came next for the cast

Rosa Salazar moved from Bird Box to Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, a jump from survival horror to a stuffed animal with opinions. Jennifer Connelly traded Requiem for a Dream for Top Gun: Maverick, swapping psychological breakdowns for high-G maneuvers. Christoph Waltz added No Time to Die to Django Unchained. The credits do not prove the film caused these shifts. They simply mark where the road bent.

Where it left its mark

Fans organized a social media petition in September 2020, pressuring Cinemark to bring the film back to theaters. The chain considered it, and James Cameron soon confirmed a limited return on October 30. Rodriguez backed the movement. Regal and AMC also participated, though Regal later announced temporary closures due to the pandemic.
