What kind of watch this is
James Cameron takes the slow-burn dread of the original and swaps it for war. Ripley wakes from 57 years of hypersleep to find her nightmare still alive, and this time, she is not running. The film is 137 minutes of high-octane action, a direct sequel that turns a stowaway into a combat scenario. It is loud, fast, and unforgiving. If the first film was a horror story, this is the military response. The tagline says it all.
What the critics said
Critics mostly agreed the sequel outshined the original, a rare feat for a second entry. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 93% as of June 2026, while Metacritic lands on 84 in January 2026. Roger Ebert called the final hour "painfully, unremittingly intense," admitting it left him emotionally drained. He struggled to define it as pure entertainment, despite admiring the craft. Others saw it differently. Jay Boyar called it the Jaws of the 1980s, a label that fits a film built on shock. Pauline Kael found the mechanics a bit stiff, though she praised Weaver’s presence. The consensus is loud: this is an action movie that remembers how to scare you.
How it did with audiences
Aliens cost $18 million and took in $85 million in the United States and $131 million worldwide. That gap between the spend and the return is the kind of thing studios dream about. On TMDB, users rate it 8 out of 10. IMDb users, scoring it as of February 2026, give it an 8.4/10.
Awards
Aliens took home 6 awards from 13 nominations. John Richardson won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Don Sharpe took Best Sound Editing. James Cameron swept the Saturn for Best Director. David Giler claimed the Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation. The film also secured the BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects. It’s a tidy stack for a movie that mostly just wants to be loud.
