After escaping with Newt and Hicks from the alien planet, Ripley crash lands on Fiorina 161, a prison planet and host to a correctional facility. Unfortunately, although Newt and Hicks do not survive the crash, a more unwelcome visitor does. The prison does not allow weapons of any kind, and with aid being a long time away, the prisoners must simply survive in any way they can.

What kind of watch this is
David Fincher’s 1992 sci-fi horror strips the franchise of its space opera trappings. Ripley crash-lands on a prison planet where weapons are banned and help is a long time away. The alien is back, and the only tools available are grit and gravity. It is 114 minutes of claustrophobic survival, where the horror is not just the monster but the bureaucracy keeping everyone alive. The tagline promises triple the terror, and the film delivers it by making the setting feel as dangerous as the creature.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 45% as of August 2024. Metacritic lands on 59, which it calls mixed or average. The audience grade is a C, a verdict that feels more honest than the algorithmic ones. Roger Ebert gave it two thumbs down, calling it "probably the best-looking bad movie I've seen in a while." He later admitted the chase scenes were contrivances. James Cameron said Fincher got handed "a big mess on a plate." Fincher has since disowned it, stating no one hated it more than he did. Weaver, however, stood by the film.
How it did with audiences
It cost $50 million and took in $160 million, a return that feels modest for a sequel but respectable for a movie about a creature that eats people. It opened behind Lethal Weapon 3, which says everything about the summer of 1992. TMDB users rate it 6.4 out of 10. The studio later claimed it was the franchise’s top earner.
What came next for the cast
Sigourney Weaver went from Alien to Avatar, a jump that defines an era. Charles Dance moved from The Golden Child to Game of Thrones, shifting genres entirely. Paul McGann took Withnail & I to Luther, trading one cult status for another. Dutton’s path wound from Crocodile Dundee II to A Time to Kill. The sequence of credits does not prove the film caused the shift. It only shows where the roads led after 1992.
