What kind of watch this is

Fede Álvarez directs this 119-minute entry in the franchise, bringing a tactile, sweat-drenched tension to the derelict space station setting. The film leans into the physical reality of the threat, focusing on the visceral dread of being hunted in tight, industrial corridors. It is not a spectacle of starships; it is a claustrophobic chase where the environment itself feels hostile and decaying. The horror comes from the proximity, the darkness, and the sheer biological wrongness of the antagonist. It trades broad sci-fi concepts for immediate, sensory fear. A tight runtime that keeps the pressure on without breathing room.

What the critics said

Critics generally liked it, though not without friction. Rotten Tomatoes shows an 80% approval rating from 392 reviews as of January 2026, with an average score of 6.9 out of 10. Metacritic lands at 64 out of 100, a figure it labels generally favorable. Jordan Hoffman of Entertainment Weekly called the direction impressive, noting how it feels new yet respects the 1979 original. Owen Gleiberman of Variety deemed it one of the best sequels, delivering the slimy creep-out goods in a way the last three did not. Not everyone was sold. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle found the first 45 minutes boring beyond description and argued the alien concept is dead. He suggested leaving poor Ian Holm out of it entirely.

How it did with audiences

It cost $80 million and took $350 million worldwide, a gap that box office accountants call a win. In the United States and Canada, it earned $105.3 million. The film also pulled $40 million from global IMAX screenings, the highest total for a horror movie in that format. Audiences rate it 7.2 on TMDB.

What came next for the cast

Cailee Spaeny stepped from Pacific Rim: Uprising and Bad Times at the El Royale into Alien: Romulus, then moved to Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Isabela Merced traded The Last of Us and Transformers: The Last Knight for a turn in Superman. The credits list the sequence. They do not explain the jump.
