What kind of watch this is
Tina Fey’s comedy treats the office like a surreal cartoon, where the fourth wall is merely a suggestion and cutaways happen mid-sentence. It is 138 episodes long, a roughly 51-hour commitment to watching Liz Lemon navigate a room full of people who cannot stop talking. The humor lands in the gaps between what is said and what is actually happening. It is a show that knows exactly how absurd its own premise is, and it refuses to apologize for it.
What the critics said
Critics warmed to the pilot, though not unanimously. Metacritic assigned it a 67 out of 100. Robert Abele of LA Weekly called the show a "weirdly appropriate and hilarious symbol of our times." Not everyone was charmed. Brian Lowry of Variety argued that Tina Fey "mostly hits too-familiar notes in the pilot." The series later earned a place in the pantheon, with Chris Harnick ranking it alongside I Love Lucy and Seinfeld.
How it did with audiences
30 Rock earned a 7.5 TMDB user score, a respectable number for a show that struggled in the ratings. The pilot drew 8.13 million viewers, but the series averaged just 6.23 million in its Wednesday 8:00 pm slot. Even with DVRs adding 7.5% to the weekly audience, the numbers never quite met the critical acclaim. Fey made light of it.
