What kind of watch this is
2 Broke Girls runs on a simple engine: two women with opposite backgrounds, one shared diner job, and a dream that costs more than they have. Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King built a show where the obstacle is the premise. It is a comedy about the gap between wanting something and being able to afford it. The humor comes from the friction of trying to build a business while broke. Six seasons of this dynamic, totaling 57 hours, is a long time to watch someone try to buy a cupcake. It is dry, loud, and relentlessly optimistic about a dream that keeps slipping away.
What the critics said
Critics were divided. Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season 63% based on 43 reviews, while Metacritic scores it 66 out of 100. The consensus praises the chemistry between Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, noting the show is rich with laughs despite predictable jokes. Dissent focused on the writing. Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter argued the series squandered its potential on cheap, unfunny gags. He also pointed to a reliance on racist or sexual material.
How it did with audiences
The series premiere pulled in 19.4 million viewers, a number that climbed past 21.5 million once DVR playback was counted. That surge secured the highest rating for a fall comedy debut since 2001, with an 8.1 score among adults 18–49. It found a particular niche with college students and young men. On TMDB, users give the show a 7.2 out of 10. A solid start, though the lead-in did the heavy lifting.
What came next for the cast
Kat Dennings moved from The 40 Year-Old Virgin and The House Bunny to Thor: The Dark World and WandaVision. Garrett Morris traded Coneheads and The Stuff for a spot in Ant-Man. Beth Behrs went from American Pie Presents: The Book of Love to Hello, My Name Is Doris. These shifts do not prove the sitcom caused them. They just happened next.
