Nobody Asked to Be Chosen: The Reluctant Heroes of 2026

A good share of what streams is about someone handed a job they did not apply for. Sometimes it is a destiny. Sometimes it is somebody chasing them down the street. The premise fits a Disney adventure as easily as a superhero series, and the 2026 slate suggests the position is still open.

The job that comes with a destiny

Moana (2026), on Disney+, goes back to a protagonist who has to accept a destiny that may be bigger than the person carrying it. Dwayne Johnson voiced Maui in the 2016 Moana, one of six notable credits on his record. The setup works because the quest outside and the one inside run along the same road, and neither can be skipped. Destiny has never been big on asking first.

Animation has carried the same load before, often with a stranger touch. Your Name. (2016), on Max, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), on Netflix, drop their leads into circumstances nobody trained them for, and both care as much about the cost as about the plot. A Silent Voice: The Movie (2016), on Crunchyroll, skips the powers and goes straight to personal burden and the long walk toward redemption. No cape required. The weight works fine without one.

When the calling is someone chasing you

The Runner (2026), on Prime Video, turns the idea around. Here the role looks forced on the character, and the story is about escape and survival under duress. The titles recommended to its fans point the same way: Kidnap (2017) and Breaking In (2018), both about people pushed well past their limits. The calling is less a noble quest than a desperate struggle. The title already tells you the recommended response.

What drives these stories is not an inborn gift but one immediate, life-altering problem that takes over everything. The Tall Man (2012), another pick for Runner fans, adds a relentless pursuit, moral ambiguity and motives kept out of sight. The toll is physical and emotional. Most of the plot is the character paying it.

Bearing the light, and the duty

Lanterns (2026), on Max, is the most literal version: people with unique abilities and a significant duty attached to them. Its next episode is dated August 16, 2026. The shows its audience gets pointed to, Gotham (2014) and Titans (2018), work the same territory, a crowded universe of heroes and villains where somebody has to protect everyone else and keep order. The job description is long. The hours are worse.

Doom Patrol (2019) and Powers (2015), from the same list, are about living with an unusual gift and the expectations that come with it, which the characters tend to find the harder half. Christopher Nolan has built a lot of his work on the same pressure. The Dark Knight (2008) and Inception (2010), two of his six notable credits, follow people carrying responsibility on a world-altering scale. Neither film lets them put it down for long.

The web of expectations

Destin Daniel Cretton, credited on Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), has worked across character-driven drama and large-scale superhero films, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) among them. Spider-Man is the textbook burdened hero, a character whose powers mostly generate obligations. Fans of the new film get steered to Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Captain America: Civil War (2016). More heroes, more pressure, and nobody gets the weekend off.

The premise does not need powers at all. Breaking Bad (2008), on Netflix, follows a character thrust into an extraordinary criminal enterprise, a calling no guidance counselor has ever suggested. The Wire (2002), on Max, looks at people whose roles inside complex systems carry real consequences for everyone around them. Neither show has a superpower in it. The consequences do the heavy lifting.

Why it keeps coming back

Across animated adventures, superhero dramas and tense thrillers, the shape holds. The hero may be fated or just unlucky, and the powers may be new or absent, but the story is about carrying something most people never have to. Writers keep finding new angles, and most of them point inward, at what the burden does to the person holding it. The fight outside is usually the easier part to film.
