What kind of watch this is
Zootopia 2 is a 2025 animated mystery that takes the city’s most famous duo and drops them into the parts of town they never wanted to visit. Jared Bush directs a 108-minute film where Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde go undercover to stop Gary De'Snake from flipping the metropolis on its head. The tagline promises they are back with a twist, which is a fair warning for a sequel that leans hard on the feeling of a clock ticking. It is a test of how much friction a partnership can absorb before the chemistry snaps.
What the critics said
Critics leaned toward praise, though not unanimously. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 90% positive score as of January 2026, while Metacritic sits at 73 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews. Nell Minow called it "pure delight," a phrase that does a lot of heavy lifting. Peter Bradshaw, however, called it a "soulless film-by-numbers affair," which is a specific kind of disappointment to have. The gap between those two takes is wider than the gap between Judy and Nick’s buddy chemistry and the script’s reliance on familiar beats.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $150 million to make and returned $1.870 billion worldwide. That makes it the second-highest-grossing film of 2025, a title it shares with the reality that Ne Zha 2 sits just above it. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10. IMDb lists a 7.4 weighted average as of February 2026. Audiences did the math quickly, and the results suggest the sequel found its audience without needing to shout.
