Zombieland (2009)
Nut up or shut up.
Columbus has made a habit of running from what scares him. Tallahassee doesn't have fears. If he did, he'd kick their ever-living ass. In a world overrun by zombies, these two are perfectly evolved survivors. But now, they're about to stare down the most terrifying prospect of all: each other.

What kind of watch this is
Zombieland runs 88 minutes. The horror is real, but the comedy is sharper. Jesse Eisenberg plays a man who hides behind rules. Woody Harrelson plays a man who kicks zombies in the head. They clash. They survive. The film treats apocalypse as a road trip with bad manners. It is tight, fast, and surprisingly kind. Ruben Fleischer directs it with a wink. You do not need to fear the zombies. You need to fear the dinner table.
What the critics said
Critics enjoyed the ride. Rotten Tomatoes lists an 89% approval rating and a 7.4/10 average as of February 2025. Metacritic places it at 73 out of 100, a score that signals generally favorable reviews. Roger Ebert noted the film avoids dreariness through "invention and well-tuned comic timing." He also awarded 3 stars, partly because of a single cameo that produced the "single biggest laugh" of the year. Other reviewers agreed the humor was sharp. The consensus is that the movie is wickedly funny. It proves the zombie subgenre is far from dead.
How it did with audiences
$24 million in. $102 million out. The math works, which is rarer than it should be for a genre film. It opened at number one in North America, pulling in $24.7 million over its first weekend. That start was big enough to briefly crown it the top-grossing zombie film in history, a title it held for a short while before bigger disasters arrived. TMDB users give it a 7.3. For a movie about eating brains, that’s a solid approval rating.
What came next for the cast
Before Zombieland, Jesse Eisenberg was in The Village and The Squid and the Whale. Afterward, he was in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Now You See Me, and The Social Network. Emma Stone moved from Superbad and The House Bunny to The Amazing Spider-Man, La La Land, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Woody Harrelson moved from No Country for Old Men and Seven Pounds to The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Venom. These shifts define the era, not necessarily the film itself. The credits do not prove cause. They just show what filled the schedule next.
