What kind of watch this is

Makoto Shinkai directs a 106-minute body-swap romance that operates on a simple, devastating premise. Two teenagers live parallel lives, but they keep waking up in each other’s bodies. The hook is not the mechanics of the swap, which are handled with brisk efficiency. It is the sudden, terrifying realization that someone else is living your life while you are unconscious. The film builds to a climax that recontextualizes every prior interaction. It is a plot device that feels like a cosmic joke, until the stakes become personal. That is when the humor stops.

What the critics said

Critics called it beautiful. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 98% Tomatometer score as of January 2025, based on 120 reviews. Metacritic gave it an 81 Metascore as of November 2024, which it files under universal acclaim. Mark Schilling of The Japan Times praised the animation's blend of realistic detail and grounded fantasy. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times called it a wistfully lovely Japanese tale. The consensus was solid, though the Boston Globe found it pretty but too complicated. Even Shinkai himself called the film incomplete.

How it did with audiences

The film earned $358 million worldwide, though it pulled in just $5 million in the United States. That disparity tells you everything about where the magic actually landed. On TMDB, users give it a score of 8.5 out of 10. Critics on IMDb rated it 8.5 out of 10 as of January 2018, a figure that held steady at 8.4 out of 10 by February 2026. It was the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time until Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train arrived. Audiences did the math; the studio just got to keep the receipts.

Where it left its mark

The film helped push non-Ghibli anime into a more mainstream place in Japan, altering how these movies are produced and promoted. Taki and Mitsuha returned in Weathering with You and the light novel. Manga creator Nekotofu cites it as a motivation for Onimai. Good Smile Company released 1/8 scale figures of the pair in March 2018. It has been referenced in Little Witch Academia, Gabriel DropOut, Shirobako: The Movie, and Kaguya-sama. In 2025, it placed 168th on The New York Times' "Readers' Choice" list of the 21st century's best films. That is not a top 100 finish, but it is a receipt.
