Young Frankenstein (1974)
The scariest comedy of all time!
A young neurosurgeon inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. In the castle he finds a funny hunchback, a pretty lab assistant and the elderly housekeeper. Young Frankenstein believes that the work of his grandfather was delusional, but when he discovers the book where the mad doctor described his reanimation experiment, he suddenly changes his mind.

What kind of watch this is
Mel Brooks directs this 1974 comedy, bringing together Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, and Marty Feldman in a story that runs 106 minutes. The hook is simple: a neurosurgeon inherits his grandfather’s castle and initially dismisses the famous reanimation experiments as delusional. Then he finds the book. The shift from skepticism to obsession drives the entire film. It is a sharp, fast-paced watch that finds humor in the gap between a mad scientist’s ambition and a neurosurgeon’s logic.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed. Rotten Tomatoes records a 95% fresh rating as of October 2024. Metacritic sits at 83 out of 100 as of August 2025. Vincent Canby called it "Mel Brooks' funniest, most cohesive comedy." Roger Ebert awarded four stars, citing visual invention. Gary Arnold was less amused, finding the plot thin. He called the puns "rib-pokers." That is a fair warning.
How it did with audiences
A $3 million budget against $86 million in United States box office receipts. The math is simple, the margin is absurd, and the studio likely counted the coins twice. On TMDB, users rate it 7.9 out of 10.
Awards
Young Frankenstein collected 7 awards from 2 nominations. Mel Brooks won the 1975 Nebula for Best Script and the 1976 Saturn for Best Director. Marty Feldman took the 1976 Saturn for Best Supporting Actor. William J. Tuttle and Robert De Vestel rounded out the Saturn haul with make-up and set decoration wins. The film also secured the 1975 Hugo and the 1974 Saturn for Best Horror Film.
What came next for the cast
Gene Wilder had already built a reputation in Willy Wonka and Bonnie and Clyde. Madeline Kahn was fresh from Paper Moon. After 1974, Wilder drifted toward Stir Crazy and The Woman in Red. Kahn pivoted to Clue and The Muppet Movie. The credits list the years, not the cause. We cannot say the film changed their trajectories. We can only note where they went next.
