xXx (2002)
A new breed of secret agent.
Xander Cage is your standard adrenaline junkie with no fear and a lousy attitude. When the US Government "recruits" him to go on a mission, he's not exactly thrilled. His mission: to gather information on an organization that may just be planning the destruction of the world, led by the nihilistic Yorgi.

What kind of watch this is
Rob Cohen directs this 124-minute action thriller, which treats a government spy mission like a high-speed chase that refuses to stop. Vin Diesel plays Xander Cage, a man whose primary skill is bad decisions at terminal velocity. The plot involves a nihilistic villain and a world-ending threat, but the film cares more about the physics of falling off cliffs than the geopolitical stakes. It is loud, fast, and completely uninterested in subtlety. The camera shakes until you forget where you are. It is a pure adrenaline shot, best taken with the volume up and the brain off.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 48% as of November 2024, a score that implies the film divides opinion rather than conquering it. The consensus calls it a missed opportunity, noting its endearing lack of seriousness. Metacritic lands on 48 out of 100, which it files under mixed or average. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it 3½ stars, arguing it is as good as a good Bond movie in its own punk way. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone found it hard to hate a movie that knows how to laugh at itself. Adam Smith of Empire called it sporadically entertaining but hampered by a choppy screenplay. It was nominated for a Razzie for Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie, losing to Jackass: The Movie.
What came next for the cast
The cast lists read like a map of Hollywood’s shifting tides. Samuel L. Jackson stepped out of Jurassic Park and Pulp Fiction to land in The Avengers and Django Unchained. Vin Diesel moved from The Fast and the Furious into Furious 7. Marton Csokas went from Xena: Warrior Princess to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Asia Argento traded Demons 2 for Marie Antoinette. The credits do not claim xXx caused these shifts. They just mark where the roads split.
