What kind of watch this is

Bryan Singer’s 2003 sequel runs 133 minutes and raises the stakes from personal vendettas to global genocide. The tone is heavier than the first film, shifting from a coming-of-age story to a war movie where the enemy is the world itself. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is the most volatile character, a ticking clock in a room full of people who want to talk. Ian McKellen’s Magneto gets the best lines, mostly because he is right about everything. It is a loud, practical blockbuster that treats its sci-fi premise with an unusual sense of dread.

What the critics said

Critics gave it a warm reception, though not a rapturous one. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 85% positive rating as of January 2026, based on 249 reviews averaging 7.5 out of 10. Metacritic settles on 68 out of 100, which it defines as generally favorable. The consensus is that the film is bigger and better than its predecessor. Roger Ebert, who gave it three out of four stars, noted the storyline didn't live up to its potential. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times found it rare for a sequel to surpass the original, praising the acting as better than usual for the genre. Not everyone agreed. Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal called it fast-paced and slow-witted.

How it did with audiences

X2 cost $110 million and made $408 million worldwide. That is a solid return, though not the kind of windfall that keeps studio executives up at night. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. For a sequel about mutants, that is a respectable number. The audience seemed to enjoy the spectacle without demanding a philosophical treatise. It was a summer hit, which is plenty for most films.

What came next for the cast

Ian McKellen arrived from the first Lord of the Rings film, then returned for the Hobbit trilogy a decade later. James Marsden moved from Zoolander to The Notebook, a tonal shift that says more about early 2000s scheduling than any single role. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart both appeared in X-Men in 2000, and both later starred in Logan. The timeline suggests momentum, not causation. Credits follow careers; they do not cause them.
