What kind of watch this is

Bryan Singer’s 2000 film treats the superhero genre like a thriller, swapping capes for trench coats and laser eyes for political paranoia. It runs 104 minutes, a tight runtime that suggests the director knew exactly where the story needed to land. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine brings a feral edge to the group dynamics, while Patrick Stewart’s Professor X anchors the moral center. The film is less about punching villains and more about the tension of living as a visible minority in a society that wants you gone. It is a film where the powers are secondary to the politics.

What the critics said

Critics found the film solid, if not transcendent. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 82% positive score from 176 reviews as of January 2026. Metacritic lands at 64 out of 100, a comfortable middle ground. Kenneth Turan called it "an accomplished piece of work with considerable pulp watchability." Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs down, noting he waited for something interesting to happen. When nothing did, he still didn't dislike it.

How it did with audiences

It cost $75 million and took in $296 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin, the kind that keeps studio executives awake with pleasant dreams rather than nightmares. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. IMDb users gave it 7.3/10 as of February 2026. Audiences did the math before the marketing department did.

Awards

At the 2001 Saturn Awards, X-Men took home 4 out of 5 nods. Bryan Singer won Best Director, while Hugh Jackman won Best Actor. Louise Mingenbach won Best Costume, and the film itself won Best Science Fiction Film. It also won the Empire Award for Best Director for Singer. The Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, however, went to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

What came next for the cast

Patrick Stewart went from a 1993 sword-swinging comedy to playing a dying mutant in 2017. Ian McKellen moved from a 1998 thriller to leading a fantasy trilogy. Famke Janssen stepped out of a 1995 spy film to star in a 2008 kidnapping drama. The credits show a sharp turn. They do not prove the X-Men caused it.

Where it left its mark

Critics often trace the modern superhero boom directly to this film. Jesse Hassenger of Paste and Stacey Henley of Syfy.com argue the genre’s mainstream lineage begins here, having established the basic formula contemporary hits have since borrowed. It revitalized public interest in heroes who were already popular with comic fans but not yet household names. Matthew Rozsa of Salon credits it with salvaging the genre after a string of poorly received late-1990s efforts. It proved the category could be profitable while tackling intelligent, complex social issues. That groundwork arguably launched Marvel’s first cinematic universe.
