What kind of watch this is

Ti West’s X is a 106-minute horror film set in 1979. It tracks a group of young filmmakers who travel to rural Texas to shoot an adult movie. The plan goes sideways when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, and the cast find themselves fighting for their lives. Mia Goth plays Maxine, who also exists as Pearl, while Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow round out the cast. The tagline promises a good time, though the reality involves fighting for survival.

What the critics said

Critics received X with a warmth that surprised its own gore. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 94% based on 229 reviews, while Metacritic lands on 80 out of 100, a generally favorable score. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called it a deliberate homage to 1974’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre. RogerEbert.com’s Abby Olcese found it a trifle that could have been more. The consensus is that Ti West returns to his horror roots with a fresh spin on the slasher formula. It earns its shocks.

How it did with audiences

It grossed $15 million worldwide against a $5.3 million budget. That is a solid return, not the miracle some rumors suggested. TMDB users rate it 6.7 out of 10, a respectable score for a horror film that finished fourth in its opening weekend. The audience was 55% male, with 73% aged 18 to 34. It dropped out of the top ten in its fourth week. Numbers like those keep a franchise alive, even if the initial budget was always a bit more than the whisper suggested.

What came next for the cast

Mia Goth stepped from supporting roles in Everest and A Cure for Wellness to headlines in Frankenstein and MaXXXine. Jenna Ortega moved from a child part in Iron Man 3 to leading Scream VI and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Brittany Snow’s path from Pitch Perfect to The Beast in Me offers less dramatic contrast. The credits list what followed. They do not prove the film caused it.
