Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

When the game is over, the fun begins.

Wreck-It Ralph is the 9-foot-tall, 643-pound villain of an arcade video game named Fix-It Felix Jr., in which the game's titular hero fixes buildings that Ralph destroys. Wanting to prove he can be a good guy and not just a villain, Ralph escapes his game and lands in Hero's Duty, a first-person shooter where he helps the game's hero battle against alien invaders. He later enters Sugar Rush, a kart racing game set on tracks made of candies, cookies and other sweets. There, Ralph meets Vanellope von Schweetz who has learned that her game is faced with a dire threat that could affect the entire arcade, and one that Ralph may have inadvertently started.

What kind of watch this is

Wreck-It Ralph runs 101 minutes and treats the arcade cabinet like a prison cell. The villain wants out, not for revenge, but to prove he can be a good guy. That specific, petty desire drives the whole plot. Rich Moore directs the chaos with a steady hand, letting the humor come from how rigid these digital worlds are. When Ralph steps into a racing game made of candy, the stakes shift from personal validation to a dire threat that could affect the entire arcade. It is a film about boundaries, and what happens when you cross them. The tagline promises the fun begins when the game ends. It delivers exactly that, without getting too precious about the metaphor.

What the critics said

Critics found Wreck-It Ralph mostly delightful, though not universally so. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 87% positive rating as of January 2026, based on 190 reviews. Metacritic assigns it a 72, signaling generally favorable reception. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times praised the film’s visual range, noting the art design allows for "tireless originality." A. O. Scott of The New York Times agreed, describing a "93-minute blast of color, noise, ingenuity and fun." Not everyone was swept up. Christopher Orr of The Atlantic called it "overplotted and underdeveloped," a dissent that sits oddly next to the consensus of joy.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $165 million, and it pulled in $471 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin, the kind of number that keeps the lights on at a major studio. In the United States, it took $189 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10.

Awards

It collected 4 awards from 2 nominations. The list includes the Annie for Best Animated Feature and the Critics' Choice pick for the same category. It also took home the Kids' Choice for Favorite Animated Movie in 2013. A winning margin that suggests the voting pool had limited options.

What came next for the cast

Jane Lynch moved from The 40-Year-Old Virgin to Only Murders in the Building. John C. Reilly swung between Gangs of New York and Guardians of the Galaxy. Sarah Silverman shifted from There's Something About Mary to Don't Look Up. Jack McBrayer traded Talladega Nights for Cooties. These shifts happened alongside the film, not because of it. The credits list what came next; they do not explain why.
