What kind of watch this is

Paul King directs a 117-minute fantasy comedy. Timothée Chalamet plays a young Willy Wonka who is so full of ideas that the world might actually need him to change it, one bite at a time. The film runs long enough to explain why a dream matters, but not so long that you forget to eat. It is a sweet, loud, and entirely self-serious origin story.

What the critics said

Critics warmed to the film, mostly. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 82% approval rating as of March 2024, based on 332 reviews. Metacritic sits lower at 66 out of 100 as of August 2024, a score it labels "generally favorable." The consensus is that Paul King’s direction and the new songs make it a sweet, old-fashioned treat.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it "spectacular, imaginative, sweet-natured and funny." Not everyone agreed. Owen Gleiberman of Variety noted it might have been a bigger hit had it been "a little less sanded off for children.

How it did with audiences

The film cost $125 million and returned $634.5 million worldwide, a margin that Deadline Hollywood pegged at a $182 million net profit. It placed sixth on their list of 2023’s most valuable blockbusters, a spot that suggests the studio’s accounting department finally slept in. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. Audiences did the math, and the math worked out.

What came next for the cast

Timothée Chalamet arrived with the gravity of Dune and left with the swagger of Marty Supreme. The credits do not say Wonka caused that shift. They simply mark the turn. Hugh Grant bounced between Heretic and Paddington, keeping his charm intact. Keegan-Michael Key moved from Just Go with It to Play Dirty, a trajectory that feels less like a climb and more like a long hallway.
