What kind of watch this is
Taylor Sheridan directs this 107-minute crime thriller with the patience of a man who knows the wind will give everything away. Jeremy Renner plays Cory Lambert, a game tracker whose eyes have seen too much of the plains, while Elizabeth Olsen brings the weight of the law to a reservation where it barely reaches. The investigation moves at the pace of a blizzard, slow and suffocating. It is not a chase movie. It is a study in what gets left behind when the snow covers the tracks.
What the critics said
Critics largely warmed to the cold. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 87% approval rating as of November 2024, while Metacritic assigns a 73 Metascore as of November 2025. The consensus calls it a character-driven mystery with smart writing and a strong cast. Owen Gleiberman of Variety labeled it a "humanistic crime drama." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praised the direction, noting Sheridan is "allergic to all things conventional." Not everyone was convinced. Jason Asenap criticized the portrayal of Native characters, arguing the film rubs the history of abuse in viewers' faces. It’s a solid thriller that knows its own temperature.
How it did with audiences
It cost $11 million and grossed $45 million worldwide, a return that satisfies accountants and satisfies cinephiles in equal measure. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10. The numbers tell a story of steady expansion rather than explosive opening. It was the sixth-highest grossing indie film of 2017.
What came next for the cast
Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen arrived from the Marvel universe. Both returned to that franchise afterward, appearing in Avengers: Endgame and the Disney+ series Hawkeye and WandaVision. Meanwhile, Gil Birmingham moved from Twilight into Yellowstone. The credits cannot say Wind River caused that shift. They can say what followed.
