What kind of watch this is
Marc Cherry’s 2019 series splits its narrative into three parallel timelines, each anchored by a woman whose marriage has just hit a wall. The tone is sharp, leaning into the absurdity of suburban secrets while keeping the stakes genuinely high. You get 17 hours of viewing, which is a solid block of time to spend watching people lie to each other with style. The structure works because the decades inform the behavior, not just the wardrobe. It is a comedy that respects its own darkness, and a mystery that respects its own jokes.
What the critics said
The reception was pleasant, if slightly uneven. Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season a 67% approval rating from 27 reviews, while Metacritic settled on a 63 out of 100. Critics praised the look but questioned the depth. Robyn Bahr of The Hollywood Reporter found the leads lacked real personhood, calling the show an ungainly fantasy. Angelica Jade Bastién of Vulture compared it to an unbalanced craft cocktail, noting the humor often undercut the drama. Not everyone was so critical. Greg Wheeler of The Review Geek changed his mind after the full season, eventually ranking it among his favorites for the year. The second season improved, reaching 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users give it a 7.9 out of 10. That is a solid score for a show that trades in secrets, not ticket sales. Without a box office figure to anchor the discussion, the verdict rests on what viewers actually thought. It seems they enjoyed the chaos enough to rate it highly, which is the only metric that matters for a series built on who is lying to whom.
