What kind of watch this is
Rob Reiner’s 1989 film asks a question that still feels a bit dangerous to ask out loud. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan spend 96 minutes talking over each other, arguing about whether men and women can be friends, and occasionally making a mess of the answer. It is a movie about the specific pain of almost having something. You do not need a reason to watch it. You just need to be ready to listen.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes tallies 90% approval from 143 reviews, while Metacritic lands on 76 out of 100, signaling generally favorable reception. Audiences polled by CinemaScore awarded it a rare A+ grade. The consensus praises the sharp interplay between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, noting the film set a new standard for romantic comedies. Roger Ebert called Reiner one of Hollywood's very best directors of comedy, crediting the chemistry for making the conventional structure special. Not everyone agreed. Caryn James of The New York Times found it an often funny but amazingly hollow film, comparing it to the sitcom version of a Woody Allen movie. That is a fair jab, though the film has survived longer than the comparison.
What came next for the cast
Billy Crystal traded the absurdity of Spinal Tap for the meta-narrative of Deconstructing Harry. Meg Ryan stepped out from behind the Top Gun cockpit into the romantic lead of Sleepless in Seattle. Carrie Fisher returned to the galaxy she helped define, a move the credits merely document rather than explain. The timing suggests influence, but the data just records the sequence.
Where it left its mark
The screenplay earned a spot on WGA West's list of 101 Greatest Screenplays in 2006. AFI later named it the sixth best romantic comedy in their "Ten Top Ten" poll. Entertainment Weekly has ranked it in their top romantic and funniest films multiple times. The Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry in 2022. The film helped popularize many ideas about love that have become household concepts now, such as the "high-maintenance" girlfriend and the "transitional person." The A.V. Club observed that its DNA is visible in nearly every rom-com since. It is a durable hit, mostly because the jokes still land.
