What kind of watch this is

Zach Cregger directs a 129-minute horror mystery that leans into the mundane before the dark. The hook is specific: every child in one class wakes at the same time, walks into the night, and vanishes. One child remains. That single survivor becomes the axis of a town’s panic. Cregger builds tension through quiet domesticity, letting the dread seep in through closed doors and empty beds. It is a film about the terror of routine interrupted. The answer to who or what took them is less important than the feeling of a world that has quietly broken.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports 93% positive reviews from 400 critics, with an average score of 8.1 out of 10. Metacritic sits at 81 out of 100, which it categorizes as universal acclaim. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com called it superior to Barbarian, noting the script’s refusal to connect every dot. Variety described it as a cruel and twisted bedtime story. Tim Grierson of Screen Daily felt the finale was superbly orchestrated.

How it did with audiences

Weapons cost $38 million and pulled in $270 million worldwide, a margin that makes accountants smile and budget planners weep with joy. It opened to $43.5 million, topping the chart and helping Warner Bros. rack up six consecutive films over $40 million at number one. The film held the top spot for two weekends before a sing-along movie nudged it aside. A 7.3 TMDB user score suggests the audience liked it enough to keep showing up.

What came next for the cast

Josh Brolin arrived off the Avengers blockbusters, then moved into The Dog Stars. Austin Abrams stepped in from Euphoria and The Walking Dead, before joining the Resident Evil series. The credits list what followed, not what caused it. One man traded superhero spectacle for a post-apocalyptic dog story. The other swapped high school angst for zombie apocalypse. It is a strange pairing, but the calendar does not care about genre logic.
