What kind of watch this is
Lynne Ramsay directs a 113-minute drama where the horror is not the event, but the years leading up to it. Tilda Swinton plays a mother who spent her life ignoring the signals, and now must sit with the silence. The film does not ask if the son is evil. It asks if the mother was blind. The pacing is slow, deliberate, and suffocating. You will not look away.
What the critics said
Critics largely warmed to the film, though not uniformly. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 74% approval rating as of November 2024, averaging 7.4 out of 10. Metacritic places it at 68 out of 100, a score that signals generally favorable reviews. Roger Ebert awarded it 4 stars, calling it "a masterful film" as a portrait of a deteriorating state of mind. Not everyone agreed. Richard Brody in The New Yorker argued the movie "masquerades as a psychological puzzle" but relies on decorous sensationalism. Ebert saw a masterful study; Brody saw a costume change.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $7 million. It took in $10 million. In film accounting, that is a modest win. In any other industry, it is a very efficient Tuesday. On TMDB, users give it a 7.5 out of 10. The numbers suggest the movie worked. It did not explode.
