We Bare Bears (2015)

Three brother bears awkwardly attempt to find their place in civilized society, whether they're looking for food, trying to make human friends, or scheming to become famous on the internet. Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear stack atop one another when they leave their cave and explore the hipster environs of the San Francisco Bay Area, and it's clear the siblings have a lot to learn about a technologically driven world. By their side on many adventures are best friend Chloe (the only human character in the cast), fame-obsessed panda Nom Nom, and Charlie, aka Bigfoot.

What kind of watch this is

We Bare Bears is an animated comedy where three siblings navigate a world that seems designed to exclude them. The hook is simple: Grizzly, Panda, and Ice Bear stack their bodies to reach the counter at a coffee shop. It is a show about how much effort it takes to be normal when you are literally a bear. Daniel Chong built the series on that specific kind of awkwardness, blending family bonding with the chaotic energy of the San Francisco Bay Area. With 138 episodes across 4 seasons, the total runtime is roughly 25 hours. It is compact enough to finish in a weekend, and odd enough to stick with you after the credits roll.

What the critics said

Critics largely warmed to the bears, though the reception wasn't uniform. Mashable called it "a parable about the charms and perils of an increasingly connected society," a description that fits the millennial anxieties the show tackles. Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media found it "a funny and heartwarming story" that gently pokes fun at modern life. Not everyone was convinced. Kevin Johnson of The A.V. Club noted the show bounced between the extraordinary and the endearing, calling it charming but not a must-watch. It’s a sweet package that knows exactly what it is.

How it did with audiences

The first episode of We Bare Bears drew 2.05 million viewers on its debut. By the finale, that number had dipped to 0.45 million. Ratings tend to slide as a series runs, but the first season held its ground in a specific corner of the market. It topped US TV ratings for children aged 2–11 in July 2015. On TMDB, users give it a 7.7 score.
