Matt Zoller Seitz called it "wickedly playful," while Odie Henderson found it "shockingly watchable." Others were less generous. Peter Bradshaw argued the narrative "disintegrates" into an unsatisfying series of plot developments, and Clarisse Loughrey compared it unfavorably to The Housemaid.
How it did with audiences
A $40 million budget yielded $119.1 million worldwide, which is a tidy profit and a decent year for anyone in accounting. In the United States and Canada, the film grossed $58.9 million. It opened with $32.6 million, topping the box office, before dropping 64% to finish second the following weekend. On TMDB, users rate it 6.4 out of 10. The numbers say the audience showed up, watched, and then moved on to something else.
