What kind of watch this is
Cameron Crowe directs a 136-minute mystery that blurs the lines between illusion and reality, and between life and death. Tom Cruise plays David Aames, a man who has wealth, looks, and gorgeous women on his arm until a car accident horribly disfigures his face. That event is just the beginning of his troubles. The film moves through romance and science fiction genres, pulling you into a world where the ground under your feet is not quite solid. It is a strange, disorienting ride. If you like your endings to unravel the beginning, this is the watch.
What the critics said
The reception sits in that awkward middle ground where ambition meets execution. Rotten Tomatoes records a 43% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, alongside an average rating of 6/10. Metacritic lands on 45/100 as of July 2025, a number that suggests the film divides opinion rather than uniting it. Roger Ebert gave it three stars, finding a moral core in the chaos. Stephen Holden of The New York Times saw a thriller that "loosens its emotional grip." It is a movie that asks you to believe in its own weight, which is a taller order than most films dare.
What came next for the cast
Tom Cruise arrived from Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, then drifted into sci-fi like Oblivion before returning to the hangar for Top Gun: Maverick. Cameron Diaz stepped out of the rom-com era defined by There’s Something About Mary, only to appear in a Tarantino film. Kurt Russell kept dancing between horror and action, from The Thing to Guardians of the Galaxy. Penélope Cruz moved from Almodóvar’s Spain to Hollywood blockbusters. The credits list the dates; they do not list the cause.
