What kind of watch this is
Stephen Sommers’ 2004 film is a 132-minute action horror that treats the classic monster mythos like a video game boss rush. Hugh Jackman plays Van Helsing, a gun-slinging hero who arrives in Transylvania to stop Dracula from teaming up with Frankenstein’s creation. The premise is a pile of monsters. The execution is a chaotic, loud brawl where explosions matter more than atmosphere. It is less a quiet dread and more a loud bang. If you want the monsters to feel like obstacles to be punched through rather than sources of fear, this is the watch.

Critics did not hold back. Rotten Tomatoes rates the film 24% as of August 2024, based on 225 reviews. The average score sits at 4.3 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 35 out of 100, a rating it files under generally unfavorable. The consensus calls it a hollow creature feature suffering from CGI overload. James Berardinelli of ReelViews called it the worst would-be summer blockbuster since Battlefield Earth. Bill Muller of The Arizona Republic said it looks like a movie assembled by computer geeks munching Doritos. Roger Ebert gave it 3 stars, finding the climax fun.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $160 million. The worldwide total hit $300 million. That margin suggests the studio covered its bets and then some. It opened at #1, pulling in $51 million over its first weekend. North America contributed $120 million, with the rest of the world adding $180 million. On TMDB, users score it 6.4 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Hugh Jackman arrived with two X-Men films under his belt and left with a prestige turn in The Prestige. Kate Beckinsale had just anchored Underworld. Richard Roxburgh came from high-profile supporting roles in Mission: Impossible II and Moulin Rouge!. The credits cannot say Van Helsing caused any of this. They can only say what followed.
