What kind of watch this is
Jonathan Glazer’s 2014 thriller swaps the usual sci-fi spectacle for a slow, hypnotic dread. Scarlett Johansson plays a figure who stalks Glasgow’s rain-slicked streets, her gaze doing the heavy lifting that a script usually handles. The film runs 108 minutes of deliberate pacing, where silence is as loud as the score. It is less a movie about monsters and more a study in predatory charm. The tagline calls it an otherworldly perspective on the human condition, which is a fair description of how unsettling it feels to watch someone else’s desire from the outside.
What the critics said
Critics leaned toward praise, though not unanimously. Rotten Tomatoes recorded an 84% approval rating as of October 2021. Metacritic assigned a Metascore of 82 in February 2024. The consensus often cited the film's hypnotic visuals and Scarlett Johansson's performance. Xan Brooks of The Guardian called it "far and away the best picture" from Venice. Peter Bradshaw, also of The Guardian, found it "visually stunning and deeply disturbing." Not everyone agreed. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter felt the film provided too little for audiences to latch onto. The divide mirrors the film itself: some see a masterpiece, others a void.
How it did with audiences
$13.3 million went in. $9.1 million came back. In box office logic, that is a quiet failure. On TMDB, users rate it 6.1 out of 10. It opened in just 4 US theaters and still topped the per-theater average for its weekend, a statistical win that changed nothing at the cash register. Phil Hoad called the budget a "danger zone." The math was unfair from the start.
