What kind of watch this is
Benny Safdie directed this 136-minute crime drama, and he leans into the noise. Adam Sandler plays Howard, a jeweler who treats every moment like a slot machine that might finally pay out. The camera never blinks. It stays on his face while he sweats, barks, and calculates odds that are mathematically impossible. This is not a movie where the protagonist wins. It is a movie where the audience loses their nerve alongside him. You will feel the floor drop out from under you, and you will keep watching to see if he catches it.
What the critics said
Critics found the Safdies finally in their element. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 91% approval rating as of October 2021, while Metacritic scores it 93 out of 100, a figure that signals universal acclaim. The consensus is that the film reaffirms the directors as masters of anxiety-inducing cinema. Sandler’s performance drew particular praise, with some calling it the best of his career. Eric Kohn of IndieWire called it "a riveting high-wire act." It is a film that makes you sweat for two hours, which is either a compliment or a warning, depending on your blood pressure.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $19 million. The domestic take was $50 million. That gap is where the real story lives. On TMDB, users rate it 7.2 out of 10. IMDb has it at 7.4 as of March 2026. A24’s highest-grossing domestic film until 2022, it turned a small release into a respectable hit.
Where it left its mark
The A.V. Club ranked it 92nd among 2010s films, a spot that feels safe. The New York Times later placed it 58th for the 21st century, while readers voted it 72nd. Rolling Stone followed with a 75th place. Inside Out 2 borrowed its camera language for Anxiety’s scenes. Diamond District workers called the stress real, though they noted Howard’s debts were exaggerated for drama. It was the Safdies’ last feature before their 2024 split. Benny dropped out of the Sandler follow-up. Josh moved on to Marty Supreme.
