What kind of watch this is
M. Night Shyamalan’s 2000 thriller trades the standard superhero origin for a slow-burn mystery. Bruce Willis plays an ordinary man who survives a train accident while his fellow passengers die. Samuel L. Jackson plays a man whose bones are as fragile as glass. The film is 106 minutes of quiet tension, built on the idea that strength and fragility are two sides of the same coin. It asks if you are ready for the truth.
What the critics said
Critics were mostly on board. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 70% as of January 2026, while Metacritic lands on 62. Ebert gave it 3 stars, praising Willis' subtlety despite his dislike of the ending. The consensus calls it quietly suspenseful, though inferior to The Sixth Sense. Not everyone agreed. Turan saw no originality, just a shadow.
How it did with audiences
Unbreakable opened against How the Grinch Stole Christmas and finished second. It collected $30.3 million in its first weekend before climbing to $95 million domestically. The film took in another $153.1 million internationally, landing a worldwide total of $248.1 million against a $75 million budget. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10. IMDb audiences score it 7.2 out of 10. The math checks out: it was a solid hit, not a cultural phenomenon.
What came next for the cast
Bruce Willis stepped out of The Sixth Sense and into Looper. Samuel L. Jackson left Jurassic Park behind to join The Avengers. Robin Wright traded Forrest Gump for Wonder Woman. These are not causal links. They are just the next things on the schedule. The calendar does not care about your favorite sequel.
