What kind of watch this is
Lee Isaac Chung directs a 123-minute action thriller where the weather is the antagonist. Kate Carter, a former chaser, clashes with Tyler Owens, a social media influencer who treats danger as content. They converge in central Oklahoma as unprecedented storm systems merge. The film leans into the visceral, practical side of disaster cinema rather than the supernatural. It asks whether you can trust a person who films their own survival. The stakes are personal, not global.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 75% Tomatometer score as of January 2026. Metacritic assigns a 65 Metascore, which indicates generally favorable reviews. The consensus finds the film splendid. Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph called it a vast improvement in all regards. Owen Gleiberman of Variety offered a mixed take, noting that real tornado footage already exists.
How it did with audiences
Twisters pulled in $267.8 million domestically and $104.5 million elsewhere, totaling $372.3 million worldwide. It opened to $81.3 million, the best start for a natural disaster film, beating The Day After Tomorrow. That debut placed it third in 2024, behind Inside Out 2 and Dune: Part Two. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences wanted chaos, but maybe not enough to make it a masterpiece.
What came next for the cast
Glen Powell moved from Top Gun: Maverick to The Running Man, a pivot that lands with less thunder than the jet fighter. Anthony Ramos swapped Godzilla for Ironheart and Highest 2 Lowest, trading kaiju chaos for hip-hop noir. Brandon Perea stepped out of Nope and into Insidious, a jump that defies logical geography. The credits list what they list. They do not explain why a tornado movie suddenly made these three look like the future.
