The body of Laura Palmer is washed up on a beach near the small Washington state town of Twin Peaks. FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper is called in to investigate her strange demise only to uncover a web of mystery that ultimately leads him deep into the heart of the surrounding woodland and his very own soul.

What kind of watch this is
David Lynch and Mark Frost took the standard murder mystery and dropped it into a fever dream. Twin Peaks starts with a high school girl’s death in a sleepy Washington town, but the real story lives in the black woods behind the houses. It is 38 hours of television where the coffee is always good, the lies are always thick, and the answers are never what you expect. The tone shifts from cozy suburbia to cosmic horror without warning. It asks you to sit still and let the weirdness happen to you.
Awards
Twin Peaks picked up 6 awards from 16 nominations in 1990. ABC took the Peabody. Patricia Norris and Duwayne Dunham won Emmys for costumes and editing, respectively. The show also grabbed the TCA Program of the Year and Drama Achievement awards, plus a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series. It swept the board, which is rare for a series with such a specific smell.
Where it left its mark
Twin Peaks has been noted to have been influential on science fiction, a label its own creators likely would have found absurd. The genre owes the show a debt for proving that strange is a valid mode of inquiry. Meanwhile, the mayors of Snoqualmie and North Bend, the towns that were both used for filming the series, declared February 24 as Twin Peaks Day in 2018. They chose that date to match the date mentioned in the first episode. It is a specific day for a show that refuses to be pinned down.
