Metacritic, slightly more restrained, sits at 80 out of 100. Roger Ebert, awarding 3.5 stars, called the Coens' work "a loving one" and noted the cinematography reminded him of the Western's glory. Not everyone agreed. Rex Reed found the pacing sluggish and Matt Damon "hopelessly miscast.

True Grit earned $252 million worldwide. The budget was $35–38 million. Those numbers suggest the studio did the math correctly. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. Critics and audiences alike likely found the PG-13 rating a useful on-ramp. It drew the usual Coen crowd, plus the grandparents who actually attended.
What came next for the cast
Bridges, Damon, and Brolin arrived at True Grit with distinct résumés. Bridges had The Big Lebowski and Iron Man behind him. Damon carried Saving Private Ryan and The Departed. Brolin leaned on No Country for Old Men and The Goonies. Afterward, their paths diverged into blockbusters and indie grit. Bridges joined Hell or High Water and Kingsman. Damon shifted toward Interstellar and The Martian. Brolin entered the Marvel era with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The credits show a drift toward franchise work. They cannot prove the Western caused that shift.
Where it left its mark
True Grit aged well. Comic Book Resources notes that, fifteen years on, its impact on the Western genre has only become clearer. Nick Stanforth of Boy Genius Report argues it is one of the rare remakes that arguably surpasses its predecessor. Debopriyaa Dutta of /Film praises its fidelity, noting it delivers a Rooster Cogburn more faithful to the book than the 1969 version. That version, she says, diluted the character. The remake didn’t just repeat; it corrected.
