What kind of watch this is
Ruben Östlund directs this 2022 comedy-drama, a 147-minute look at luxury that has curdled into panic. Carl and Yaya board a cruise for the ultra-wealthy, only to find the glamour dissolving under an unhinged captain. The ship’s fate leaves the survivors on a desert island, where the social ladder inverts. It is a sharp, uncomfortable study of how quickly privilege evaporates when the engines stop. The humor is dry, the discomfort real, and the ending lands with a thud.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 72% approval rating as of May 2023, while Metacritic assigns a 63/100 Metascore as of October 2025, signaling generally favorable reviews. The consensus describes the film as a blackly humorous swipe at the obscenely affluent. Alysha Prasad of One Room With A View called it "utterly unhinged in the best way possible." Not everyone bought the pitch. Richard Brody of The New Yorker dismissed it as "targeted demogogry," arguing the social commentary submerges the keen observations. It is satire that expects you to laugh first and think later.
Awards
Triangle of Sadness collected 8 awards from 11 nominations. The highest honor was the 2022 Palme d'Or. Ruben Östlund swept the 2022 European Film Awards for Best Film, Director, and Screenwriter. Zlatko Burić took the Best Actor gong. The film also claimed the 2022 Guldbagge for Best Film and the 2023 Robert Award for Best English Language Film. It took the Meeting Point Europe Award.
What came next for the cast
Harris Dickinson moved from The King’s Man to a string of leads like The Iron Claw and Babygirl. Woody Harrelson shifted from The Hunger Games to Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and Fly Me to the Moon. Dolly de Leon’s path is thinner, jumping from Nine Perfect Strangers to Jackpot!. The timeline suggests momentum, not causation. Credits list what followed, not what caused it.
