What kind of watch this is

Tremors is a 1990 comedy-horror about a small town that suddenly finds itself fighting a war against the dirt. Ron Underwood directs a 96-minute film where the ground is the enemy. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward spend their time running, shouting, and trying to keep the floor from giving way. The tagline warns that there is nothing new under the sun, but it implies there is something new under the ground. It is a movie that treats a giant, blind worm as a neighborhood nuisance. The stakes are existential, but the tone remains light. It works because the fear is fun.

What the critics said

Tremors arrived to mostly good press, with critics agreeing on the vibe if not always the execution. Rotten Tomatoes holds an 86% Tomatometer score, while Metacritic assigns a 65 Metascore. The consensus leaned toward affection. The Boston Globe saw a fun return to 1950s science fiction. The New York Times offered a cooler take, noting the film "wants to be funny but spent too much time winking at the audience." That wink is the dividing line. Some saw charm; others saw a script that relied on nostalgia to cover its predictable beats.

How it did with audiences

$10 million to make, $17 million to take back. By studio math, that is a failure. Kim Newman called it "modestly profitable," which is a polite way of saying the profit was thin. It opened at number 5 and held the top 10 for four weeks. CinemaScore audiences gave it a B−.

What came next for the cast

Kevin Bacon moved from Friday the 13th and Planes, Trains and Automobiles to Mystic River and X-Men: First Class. Fred Ward traded The Right Stuff for Naked Gun 33⅓ and Road Trip. Michael Gross shifted from Big Business to ER and Noelle. The credits do not claim the earthquake caused these shifts. They simply mark where the roads diverged after 1990.
